About Zirgune
Zirgune is the Euskampus Circular Economy (CE) Community, which brings together key research and innovation actors from the Euskampus institutions (UPV/EHU and Tecnalia) and their closest collaborators in the EC.
In this context, Zirgune’s overall objective is to generate the necessary ecosystem conditions to create a Basque Circular Economy community that strengthens the Basque Country’s current economic system in the transition towards a Circular Economy model that, in turn, has a transforming effect on the whole of Basque society.
The Circular Economy represents a paradigm shift that is based on a socio-economic system whose production and consumption model implies reusing, repairing, renewing and recycling existing materials and products to keep the materials within the economy whenever possible. A circular economy implies that waste is turned into a resource and therefore the real amount of waste will be minimised. Generally speaking, a traditional linear economic model based on a pattern of “take-make-use-throw away” is rejected and replaced with one of: “re-use and recycle”, minimising the impact on the environment.
