Description

Successful deployment of renewable marine energy includes improving the designs of floating wind turbines, which are currently the result of independently designed components and are therefore oversized and subjected to high loads due to their strong interaction. Current design knowledge and techniques are not sufficient to address this challenge. New co-design tools are required to incorporate control from the outset and consider all subsystems, dynamics and interactions, instead of trying to optimise based on control techniques once the wind turbine has been designed.

Applicability/impact of the results:
The project objectives are eminently practical, aimed at their use in industrial designs. From the use of co-design techniques during the early stages of design in order to reduce costs, to testing prototypes of different control solutions before validating them in more complex and costly experiments, such as channel tests. The proposal is based on the design of a low-cost yet versatile prototype, which enables the most theoretical results to be experimented and therefore transfer the results of the co-design to a real application more easily, without requiring large investments to validate different configurations until the right one is found. The applicability and impact of the development of the prototype and the techniques proposed herein is extremely broad, since the entire value chain of this type of floating solutions is based in the Basque Country, as mentioned above.
